Summer Fun at the Santa Monica Pier

Living in Los Angeles, one of the mainstay activities for many matches is heading westward to Santa Monica and exploring the Pier. Indeed, my first match outing was to the Santa Monica Pier, where my Little Sister and I spent hours at the arcade, the carousel, and enjoying cotton candy along the water.

Locals may be put off by the hoards of tourists, but those that overlook this oceanside gem will be missing out on some of the best activities LA has to offer! This summer, the Pier offers something for everyone.

For the athletically-inclined…

Every Saturday morning from July 14 – August 18, the Pier is offering a free, 8 am groupĀ beach run/walk! The 2 mile and 5 mile courses are open to all speed and distance preferences. Don’t forget to stretch! Meet beneath the Pier sign at Colorado and Ocean.

After running, at 9 am, the west end of the Pier plays host to a freeĀ yoga session guided by Santa Monica’s best instructors. Bring your own mat, and zen out to the sounds of waves lapping on the Pier.

For the culture vultures…

The Pier hosts 6 different performance artists on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from July 24 – August 29, at the end of the Pier during Sea Saw. Elevate your day with free art by The Portalists and Alex LeGolvan, presenting their works on different weeks throughout the summer.

For the politically active…

Littles that are aspiring political change-makers will revel in the opportunity to experience a political political discourse on current issues by experts on different sides of the aisle. The Pier’s free Pro/Con debate series, running August 6 – 27, will surely open their minds and stoke critical thinking.

For marine life enthusiasts…

Did you know the Pier has an aquarium created by Heal the Bay? Explore touch tanks, their new seahorse exhibit, and the tanks containing over 100 other local species.

From July 22 – 29, the aquarium celebrates shark week with shark-themed crafts, films, and artifact display. Admission for ages 13+ is $5, and ages 12 and under are free!

For the foodies…

Being right on top of the ocean, there’s no better place to chow down over the ocean than the Pier. Whether your Little’s trying seafood for the first time, or you’re into the classics, there’s a meal for everyone at the Pier restaurants and snack shacks. Kids menu items at most locations are under $10!

For the thrill seekers…

The Pier’s Pacific Park boasts 12 rides that are sure to give you and your Little an adrenaline rush. The spins of Shark Frenzy and the views of the Pacific Wheel will keep you both smiling all day long. Rides and attractions are priced individually from $5 – $10, or you can purchase an unlimited wristband to enjoy all the rides as much as you’d like. Purchase online for a discount!

For those looking for a good time…

The Pier offers hour-long walking tours featuring incredible stories about the Pier’s history. Offered Saturdays and Sundays at 11 am and 12 pm, you and your Little are bound to learn something new about this seaside attraction.

For Littles that enjoy a bit of nostalgia, the Historical Carousel is also not-to-be-missed. The Playland Arcade is always a match-pleaser, including classic games like Skeeball and the Claw, as well as more modern, digital games. Learn more about what the Pier has to offer!

You’ll notice that fishing is also permitted on the Pier! Residents 16 years or older need a license to fish, so be mindful of the law before breaking out the tackle box.

As you can see, the Pier offers free and low-cost entertainment for matches with varied interests. Don’t pass up the opportunity to check out one of their many exciting, thought-provoking, and/or tasty activities this summer!
